Learn to Bust a Move at Beginning West Coast Swing!

Several months ago, if you were to ask us to go out for a night on the town, hitting up some clubs, maybe to something off the beaten path like a swing dancing competition, there’s little doubt we would have opted for something else. “We’re really not much for dancing” one of us would likely say.

Its strange how things can turn around.

Initially, we got into dancing because its a “fun” form of exercise. Neither of us had much experience dancing, and it wasn’t something we came to the table with a great passion for. Approaching dance lessons, we saw it chiefly and something new and interesting to try committing ourselves towards.

After about two or three weeks at the lessons, we found that we were hooked. Its fun and challenging. Both of us were slimming off the pounding and building up some lean muscle. After a month or so of beginner’s classes, we started taking the advanced ones, building our skill, keeping in shape. We started going to dancing (mostly swing) competitions, initially as observers, and then later, after we’d started working out routines, as competitors.

If you’re interested in learning how to swing dance, the Henegar Center for the Arts offers some six-week blocks of Beginning West Coast Swing classes, every Wednesday, from 6pm-7pm.

Not much of a dancer. Well, neither were we, and you never know until you try.
